Writing the perfect bio for your Instagram profile can be hard. You have a limited amount of space, yet you have to summarize the entire essence of you into it. It seems so daunting, but it doesn’t have to be.

So, how can you write the best possible bio for your Instagram?

Make Your Purpose Clear

If you are a business or you offer some sort of service, make sure that’s clear in your bio. State who you are and what your purpose is. If this is an Instagram page for your jewelry business on Etsy, say so in your bio. Even if all your photos are of jewelry that’s clearly for sale, you still have to say so in your bio. How likely would you be to go into a jewelry store without a sign out front, even if there were a few things in the window?

“If you are in a specific profession or industry niche, or are known for offering a particular service, then it is important to make this clear in your Instagram bio to help you immediately connect with the right crowd.” — Falcon

Use the Name Field to your Advantage

The name field on Instagram is valuable to SEO discoverability, yet is rarely used for that! Instead of using the name field in your bio to state your name or your company’s name, use it to share your top targeted keywords. That way, you are way more discoverable when people are searching for a certain type of person, business, or niche.

“Brainstorm the keywords your ideal customer might search for on Instagram — it could be your niche, the products you sell, or the city your business is located. Once you find the right keywords, put them into your Name Field.” — Later

Add a Call-to-Action

If there is something you want your potential audience to do other than follow you and look at your photos, then you need to include a call to action! If you want people to go to the website that is linked in your bio, say so. Otherwise, it’s very easy to skip over. The only expectations for people on Instagram are to look at your photos and read your captions. Anything else is extra that you need to ask for.

For example, in the bio for the Like A Voss Instagram, it says “Book a free discovery session” right before the link to the website. Without that, fewer people would click on the link because they’d have no clue what it was for!

Update it Often!

Once you’ve written your bio, it’s easy to just forget about it. Don’t! Your bio may seem perfect now, but things are always changing. You don’t want out-of-date information sitting unnoticed in your bio. You may not notice it, but new people checking out your profile for the first time will!

“It’s so easy to focus on your photos and content that you never realize you haven’t updated your bio in two years. Never overlook your bios when cleaning up your social media profiles. Your bio is your audience’s first glimpse into who you are and what you’re about. It needs to be consistent with your present values.” — Like A Voss

Your bio needs to say a lot in such a small space, but it can if you know how to do it right!
